I have been a teacher and private tutor for 10 years and a homeschooler for 13 years, in Australia, South Korea, and New Zealand. I have taught students of all ages. My main teaching areas are Visual Art and English, but I like to dip my brush into many different subjects and enjoy learning and teaching new things. Since beginning to homeschool my 3 children 13 years ago, I have been working from home on various projects, including building my own brand 'Miraculous Mosquito', which explores topics such as art, teaching, and homeschooling.
Whether I am teaching in the public system or homeschooling my own children, I like to allow students to work at their own pace, concentrating mostly on their strengths and interests, while also making sure that they are supported in learning skills that they find more difficult. Through the process of homeschooling my own children, I have learnt the importance of 'real life learning', using everyday life experiences as learning opportunities. I have been influenced by the many different approaches to education which are out there, and borrowed ideas from each to suit the students I am working with. With regards to my own children, I find that the most important thing is to provide opportunities, tools and resources for learning, encourage them in their interests, and let them be a part of the running of our family and household. We have family rules which we try hard to stick to, and adapt and change as the children grow and our situation changes. In this way they learn naturally and build genuine motivation and love of learning which will hopefully last them into adulthood and beyond. Children are born with a huge interest in their world, and are already equipped with the ability to seek knowledge in their own way. Learning should be fun, not forced :)
Still waiting for the big one that says I can stop everything else I am doing so I can go draw and make art forever!
I was born in New Zealand and went to primary school there until I was 8 years old, then moved to Australia with my parents and was educated and graduated in the public system. I went to university in Australia and trained to be a high school teacher, graduating with a 4 year Bachelor of Education, with majors in Art and English.
If you hadn't already noticed from the items in my shop, I love to draw and make art! I am always exploring and playing with new materials and ideas. If you would like to see more of what I am doing right now, search for Miraculous Mosquito and join me on the many other platforms I use to display my work. Don't forget to say hi, and let me know if you found me on TPT :) See you there!
