Laughter is essential to good teaching, especially in middle school. I have been known to roar as I entered my classroom, and always, if one of my students asked, I would complete a perfect somersault at the end of each class on Fridays, even at

When I was growing up, I lived near Haverhill, Massachusetts, where Andre Dubus was teaching. Young artists always learn from imitating the masters, and to me and so many others, Andre Dubus was a master short story writer. When I gave up the dream

Updike's short story "A & P" has always been one of my favorite stories both to read and to teach. The author visited my school several years before he died, and he was all I could have hoped for with the students in both the high school and

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

After teaching English for the past thirty-four years, I retired from the classroom this past spring and am embarking on a new career as an English tutor. I also teach creative writing workshops for middle school students during the summer in poetry and fiction. Although I became certified to teach secondary English in New Hampshire in 1976, I have always taught in private schools, starting in 1978 at The Rivers School in Weston, Massachusetts, where I taught primarily in the Upper School. I moved to Connecticut in 1997 and taught for fifteen years in the Middle School at the Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford.

MY TEACHING STYLE

An interesting mix given my longevity; I always taught my students a great deal, and we always managed to have a great deal of fun in the process!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

awarded the William F. Gallagher Teaching Chair by The Rivers School (Weston, MA) 1992-1995

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Trinity College, Hartford, CT (1971) BA in English; Keene State College, Keene, NH (1976) Certification in Secondary English

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

In my youth I published poetry and fiction in little magazines, but that was a long time ago!
