I am currently a 4th Grade Special Education Inclusion teacher at Kapunahala Elementary on the island of O`ahu in Hawai`i. I’ve been a full-time special education teacher for the past 6 years, and I have worked as a part-time teacher, skills trainer, and Hawaiian Language Immersion teacher in the years prior.
I absolutely love to teach. From the prep and organization to the actual time with the students, teaching completely makes me happy. The best part of my job is being able to see the students’ reaction when their little light bulbs go on and they understand a concept or they realize they can do something they weren’t able to do before. In my classroom, I make sure my students are given the best opportunity to learn using multi-sensory instruction. As an experienced special education teacher, I have found that it is more effective to teach with projected visuals than it is to teach from a text book or worksheet. Graphic Organizers are definitely beneficial to keep students from having information overloads and to practice concepts, but the best way to relate to students is to interact with them and have open discussions at higher depth of knowledge levels. I also like to encourage teachers to use projects or other hands-on activities as assessment of students’ understanding and grasp of standards/lesson objectives. I’ve been producing my own curriculum for many years, and they have all proven to support student achievement. This is my very first time sharing my home-made resources with anyone, let alone realizing the possibility of other great educators finding value in them and using them to support their students’ achievement. As a teacher, there is no greater accomplishment than to reach as many students as possible.
