TEACHING EXPERIENCE

The contributors to Help Teens Read have 25 years of experience with urban adolescent reluctant and striving readers. We have developed a successful literacy intervention model for 6th through 9th grade for a large urban school district. Currently we support a lab classroom and provide literacy curriculum coaching and professional learning for 8 middle schools and 4 high schools. You can read more about our work at www.helpteensread.org.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Our focus in the classroom is on three elements necessary for changing the stars for struggling secondary readers: skill development, motivation, and self efficacy. We do that primarily through the workshop model with focus on morphology, in context vocabulary strategy development, reading strategy development (centered on the skills to support reciprocal teaching) and supporting these strategies through reading workshop (choose-driven, independent reading, with intentional conferencing).
