I have a long history studying and enjoying music. I formally studied piano for nine years, competing in music competitions, but have since continued to study the discipline independently as time allows because, honestly, making music is fun. Currently, I play piano for family, friends, church, and special events when asked. And I serve as a piano teacher to local families.
Even more than piano, I enjoy singing and writing songs, especially songs that aim to impart academic knowledge. It's a great challenge writing a piece that is pleasant to the ear, but also functional in its content. If done well, the student will easily pick up the information and retain it. I think this is most effective when lyrics offer a clear rhythm as well as a rhyming pattern. A song doesn't need to lose musical value even though the lyrics are mostly a list of countries or geographical features of a continent.
My young children think its great and you bet they know their European geography!
