During my 16 years of teaching, I have gathered a wealth of experience both at home and abroad. I currently teach English as an Additional Language (EAL) in Canada to elementary and middle years students. In the past, I spent a few years teaching EFL in Korea and Thailand where I encountered students of all ages and backgrounds. I spent a few of those years teaching grade 6 in a private elementary school and a couple more years running a tutoring business.
I believe that as a teacher, I more often play the role of the facilitator. I enjoy using student-centered activities that provide guidelines but still allow students the freedom of making choices in their learning. The materials I produce for HomEd are more teacher-centered for the purpose of ensuring comprehension for the whole group. However, this provides a foundation so that all students can come to class ready to engage in activities like literature circles, role plays, character dialogue creations, readers theatre, and so on. The approach I take when dealing with the content of the novels is transmission. Comprehension is necessary for students to be able to take the next step of relating the experience of the characters to themselves. This is where my approach changes to transaction. Using extension activities that connect the students to the stories not only provides a deeper understanding of what they're reading but also a greater sense of intrinsic motivation when the activities are shaped by the students.

Love living life. While I am passionate about reading and sharing the enjoyment of literature with my students, there is nothing more valuable than experiencing what life has to offer outside of the classroom. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to spend a number of years of my life traveling and experiencing what's out there. My travels have also influenced my recreational activities including camping, scuba diving, cycling, and kumdo. More important than all of this is being able to share valuable experiences including the joy of reading with my daughters.
