As an English major at U of A, I always balked when someone asked if I planned to become a teacher. But through a series of jobs that always involved teaching, I finally realized it was in my blood, went back to school for certification, and landed a dream job at a school I love. I am still there. I have 16 years of classroom experience as a secondary honors and AP English Language teacher at one if Arizona's leading high schools, University High School. Throughout my career I have developed many of my own materials as I could never find materials that challenged students to think and analyze literature for themselves. I would love to help others save time by offering my materials to the public.
I believe all people can learn the skills of critical thinking and excellent writing. Some students may have more steps to take than others, but everyone can learn to think and write effectively. My classroom is very discussion, group work and small assignment based. I do assess students with reading quizzes and Socratic Seminars, and writing assignments, but I always seek to design the assignments for individuals to learn about themselves and appreciate the work they produce. I structure my classroom and materials with high standards and expectations. I teach honors and AP courses, so my students know that they must work hard, but I truly believe that challenges should be presented to all students.
