Science Teacher - 10 years - Biology, Earth & Space Science, Environmental Science AP Biology Teacher - 3 years Instructional Coach - 2 years Graduate School Teacher of Science Education Principals - 3 years
My main focus in science education is an inquiry approach to all content. Why teach students the requirements for planets to sustain life when they can look at a data set and figure out the major principles themselves? My work heavily incorporates the College Readiness Standards (ACT Standards) into each lesson. All lessons integrate multiple CRSs.
National Board Certification (AYA Science) Fishman Prize Finalist Teach For America Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching Finalist
After graduating from Boston College with a B.S. in Biology, I decided to defer my med school acceptance and spend two years trying something new. I was accepted into Teach for America in Chicago spent the next two years in a low income school teaching Biology and Earth Science. After doing this work for two years, it was clear to me that education was my life-long mission. I moved into a charter school and spent the next eight years honing my craft. Along the way, I helped write our charter network's interim assessment system based on College Readiness Standards, earned my National Board Certification, led our school to the highest ACT Science growth in our network's history, helped first and second year science teachers improve their skills, and was nominated for multiple national honors. After ten years of teaching, it was time again for me to try something new. I was promoted to the Dean of Instruction for STEM and now I get to coach the other amazing math and science teachers at my school.
