For a magical decade, I served as counselor, teacher of all things "music," and happy ringleader to a lively batch of kids known as "Lessia's Crew." During this grand adventure, I realized I could greatly empower kids of varied ages by penning useful life wisdoms into songs that were addictively fun to sing. As our giant choir evolved into a "Santa Barbara Phenom!" (Montecito Journal,) I began professionally recording our wisdom-packed songs using my gifted singers on lead vocals. All our recordings were created in a marvelous recording studio, the kids are backed by a real band. We even used Justin Timberlake's drummer! Based in pretty Sonoma now, I'm happy to report that offering social skills and take-no-prisoners common sense inside lyrics still gets me giant hugs. "Your songs are saving my life!" I get that a lot. I love my work :-)
Arming kids with “spot on” understanding greatly improves their chances of becoming productive classroom citizens. Powerful lyrics linger on and become new thinking. I'm in LOVE with words and share this happy addiction with my students. Every BP lyric line serves as a writing prompt. Melodies teach kids to sing fluidly. Songs hold melodic surprises, making them great for music study. Although I'm a highly trained songwriter and producer, my main focus is on critical thinking, ELA, and helping kids find their voices in every possible way.
We once received a fan letter from Susan Sarandon. She said she loved our music, then offered up her youngest son to be our bass player. How cute is that? A Beach Boy asked me write with him once, that was pretty awesome. My life has been full of surprises - and I feel so blessed! One student chose my songs as her "Hero" for a classroom project. That made my LIFE! Teacher collabs: I was honored to have Dru Frick, a lovely Santa Barbara teacher, offer to write simple lesson plans for my songs when I first joined TpT. Now I'm excited to be working with Retta from Rainbow City Learning. Retta left me so much enthusiastic feedback, I finally asked if she'd like to co-create. We're hard at work created ELA units these days as "Bullyproof Rainbow." Also, please check our our new little art store called Awesome Sauce :-)
Lessia: USC's program for gifted students, San Francisco Conservatory, Music Academy of the West, Curtis Institute of Music, Dick Grove (contemp music) Dru: Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and experienced in inquiry based learning, International Baccalaureate trained. For my BR co-hort Retta, please see RCL.
Voices on BP studio recordings include Jessie Bridges- daughter of actor, Jeff, Viva - daughter of Martin of "Depeche Mode," and Rachel Sand, a young actor who shares a manager with Hilary Duff. I'm proud mom of two fun sons. My better half is a speaker engineer and designer named Teddy. He's Canadian and loves ice cream :-)
