For a magical decade, I served as music teacher, songwriter, and counselor to a giant choir known as "Lessia's Crew." During this most special adventure, I noticed I could empower kids greatly by sprinkling deep insights into songs that were addictively fun to sing. As "Lessia's Crew" became "a Santa Barbara phenom" (Montecito Journal,) we began recording in a top notch studio - my gifted young singers featured as lead singers. Backed by an awesome band that included Justin Timberlake's drummer, we had a blast and kids learned a lot. Since then, our tunes have traveled the world. I get the most touching mail ever... oowah. Up north in pretty Sonoma now, I still help kids collect wisdom for their pockets. "Your songs are saving my life!" I get that a lot. I love my work.
Student reviews: "You're my Yoda!," "Your wisdom works!", "I love how random you are. It cracks me up how much sense you make!" "Growing up with your songs is the reason I'm the only one working at Google who hasn't been handed mindfulness material to keep me sane. I don't need it. You taught me well!" "Your way of thinking is so refreshing. You should write a book!" "Thank you for teaching me about owrry monkeys!" "I came back for your songs. I can't live without your songs..." I believe in taking no prisoners, but gently. Lyrics work much better than lectures :-) Adding ELA or music lessons in - even better!
When a student chose my songs as her "hero" for an important classroom project, I was forever touched. One of the Beach Boys asked me to write with him for Disney. As you can imagine, that made my life! BP songs have been on award-winning documentaries, won oodles of awards, but a hug from any student is the best reward of all. This story is kind of fun; When my student Zoe entered her recording of a BP song on American Idol's international internet song competition, she came in fourth. Go Zo!
