Some of the best teachers I had growing up did not have advanced degrees (in the pre-NCLB days), but nevertheless, were women who were visibly passionate about teaching and who were genuinely interested in helping their students lean. As a teacher, I strive to provide a supportive and engaging environment that promotes team-work and active participation amongst students. An outstanding teacher uses creative tools (e.g. visual aids, demonstrations, re-enactments of events, new technology, etc) to assist in the learning of difficult concepts. He/She provides structure for each new content area, and encourages students to find their own sense of agency by becoming active learners who can find interconnected themes from one unit to another throughout the year (e.g., The American Revolution and the Constitution, or Biology and the life cycle of a butterfly). But perhaps the most important qualities embodied by an outstanding teacher are those that center on the nurturing of a child’s development, both in- and outside the classroom. Discourse between the home environment and the school is essential to help children find academic success “a teacher who is knowledgeable of each student’s learning needs (e.g., auditory focused, attentional difficulties, etc), can design the classroom to better accommodate those needs (such as simple ergonomic alterations in desk position). Likewise, understanding that home is still ever present when a student walks out their front door and into the classroom, outstanding teachers develop strong, positive, respectful relationships with students and their families, and provide a warm and comforting place for the students to go to when there isn’t someone at home.
I believe that children are individual beings and unique in their ways of learning. Each child brings something special to the classroom, and without that uniqueness; the class wouldn’t be the same. That being said, as a teacher I would try to work with each child’s weaknesses as well as build upon their strengths. I would use all modalities in order to reach each child individually as well as the class as a whole. I also feel that children should be active participants in their own learning and need to be actively engaged in each of the lessons. Throughout my student teaching, I had the opportunity to have my students “role play” and use “accountable talk” in their learning. The students, regardless of their ability had an opportunity to participate and they all got something out of the experience. I find that learning is an ongoing process, and we need to tap into the student’s prior knowledge to bridge that gap between the old and new. In my classroom, I want my students to look beyond what is given to them, make inferences and see what predictions can be made. I want my students to be able to question motives and think outside the box. In my classroom, the students are active participants and really enjoy learning material that is presented to them. My role as a teacher would be to facilitate their knowledge and help the students really understand what the reasoning is behind events, stories, and theories. The curriculum doesn’t really change from year to year, but the instruction and the impact on the students can. My goal is to set high expectations and allow all my students to succeed, not just in my classroom but in life as well.

I am currently debating about going back to school for a second master's degree in Speech Language Pathology. I am also proficient in ASL.
