I have been in education for 14 years. My teaching experience has been in grades two and four. I am beginning my 8th year as a school administrator. I have worked in both a private and public school setting. My experience, as an administrator, has been in the role of an assistant principal. Over the past five years I've worked in title I schools with the average free or reduced population being 75%. Over the past five years I've worked in Leader in Me schools utilizing the Franklin Covey program focusing on student leadership. During one of my tenures, the school I worked at became the 17th Lighthouse School in the world. I've also worked in a school that housed sixty EBD students and served as the county's site school for students with this disability. I now serve as an assistant principal at school in my hometown of Georgia.
School should be an interesting place. Students should want to come to school to learn something new everyday. What better way to get kids excited about school than to make learning fun and exciting. I've always said that I want my kids to leave more tired than I am at the end of the day. Kids won't leave this way by doing worksheets all day long. I want my kids to take ownership in their learning. I want them to see how what they are learning will benefit them in the real world. I want them to work collaboratively with one another to accomplish a set standard or learning/behavior goal. Students need to develop both character and competence. I provide many leadership opportunities for the students I work with and seek ways for them to experience leadership roles. I believe in using creating discipline to help teach lifelong skills they will need to posses in order to be successful in the 21st century.
