KABOOM! I enjoy hearing about educators' favorite lessons and games, and most of them are really engaging. But in my experience Kaboom! has been my number one. My students love playing rhythm Kaboom for various concepts, and it's versatile enough to use for centers, review games, substitute plans, and even when traveling between classrooms. To play, students pull a card from a box and clap the rhythm; if correct, they keep the card, and if not, they return it to the box. If they draw a Kaboom c

An effective way to engage students is by playing games. Match IT! is a great way to encourage their note-reading development and for the teacher to formatively assess them. Simply cut out the cards and paste the 'cover' card (treble clef + number) to a 'face' card (staff or letter name/word). It would be best laminate each completed card to ensure their longevity. Students place cards on the table face down and attempt to match the correct notes and note-words (similar to memory matching games)

Hello fellow music teachers! Flashcards with different types of instruments can be a useful tool to introduce students to a variety of instruments and their sounds. You can use these flashcards in different ways. You can hold up a flashcard and ask students to name the instrument, or they can play a sound clip of an instrument and ask students to identify it by holding up the corresponding flashcard. Teachers can also use flashcards in a game format (matching game, memory game), and student

Hello music teachers! I love centre activities. And I'm always developing new ways to make them thoughtful, fun, and engaging. Here is one based on the classic card game 'Go Fish'. Go Fish is a classic card game usually played by 2-6 players, using a standard 52-card deck. The objective is to collect the most four-of-a-kind sets (four cards of the same rank) by asking other players for specific cards. In this case, we will be using note cards. Here's how to play: 1. Shuffle the deck and de

Students partner up in online breakout rooms. Students can share the file with one other to manipulate the game, or one student can open/host the game, and screen-share as their opponent calls out the card numbers to the host. Players have to match the correct cards by clicking on them in PRESENT mode. Host goes first and then opponent directs the host to which number they would like to choose. If a wrong answer is made, that player loses their turn. Play in "Present" mode and move the chips in

This is called the beat. I can clap along with the beat. Or I can snap my fingers with the beat. Or I can tap my foot with the beat. Or I can bob my head with the beat. It doesn't matter how you do it, you’re still feeling the beat. The beat is the pulse of the music you’re listening to - in fact it’s the heartbeat. When musicians say “play in time” they mean feel the beat and play along with it. So if I wanted to play something along with the beat, I would get out my trusty metronome - this w

After the instructor models examples for both major and minor scales, students are then invited to build a major and minor scale interactively with the video. Body percussion is a great way to work on your rhythm skills and get creative. By the end of today’s video we’ll be using the six sounds - clap, snap, chest pat, thigh pat, cheek tap, tongue click - to create a cool 4 bar rhythm. First thing’s first. You want to get to know the quality of your sounds - also known as the TIMBRE. It just means that a ‘clap’ has a different quality of sound than a ‘snap’, or a ‘pat’. What that’s going to help you do is organize your sounds more strategically so tha
