TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been a teacher for ten years. Seven years teaching Advanced Placement: Literature and Composition. Five teaching An Introduction to Poetry: Appreciation, Writing, and Criticism. Eight teaching American Literature. I have also taught American History, World History, British Literature 1 and 2, and a Social Studies Capstone course designed around the basic precepts of the AP Capstone experience.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Discourse and analysis through discussion and student produced artifacts. I hope to facilitate higher ordered critical thinking skills through schema based lessons that begin with what the student knows.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I spent two years as a residential carpenter before enrolling at Lansing Community College to resume my formal education. I then transferred to Central Michigan University and earned a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education with a major in English and a minor in history. After successfully completing student teaching I was hired by Holt Public Schools. After two years of successful teaching I applied for Central Michigan University's MA in English with a emphasis in creative writing: fiction. I successfully defended my thesis in the Fall of 2012.
