Many moons ago I had the privilege of working directly with struggling students of all grade levels, K-12. At the time I served as director of a specialized learning center, training and supervising teachers and credential students in techniques to remediate learning challenges. Students arrived at the center with a variety of learning difficulties, including dyslexia. These were the kind of bright, capable kids whose experience in the classroom left them feeling incompetent, dejected, and extremely self-critical. Together we not only helped our students overcome their limits to learning. We were thrilled to witness their transformations back to strong, confident kids who were ready and eager to take on the world! While life may have sent me an unexpected curve ball since then, my heart still belongs with children who struggle to learn. Whether you are a proactive parent, specialist, tutor, or classroom teacher, I now design therapeutic educational materials to help YOU help your children discover their true learning abilities. It takes a bit of a commitment on your part, a bit of cognitive strength training, a bit of patience, and a whole lot of encouragement from Inner Pieces Gallery. If you have a struggling student at home or in the classroom, I sincerely hope you’ll join me!
Cognitive enrichment activities are my specialty. I believe the key to helping students succeed in academics is to first make sure they have solid foundation skills to support their learning. These skills include visual processing, auditory processing, and spatial awareness, to name a few. Targeting specific processing skills not only helps boost the abilities of struggling readers. Powerful, skill-building activities may be easier to implement than you think.
My best shining moments come from proud-parent updates. I LOVE hearing about the achievements of students who previously struggled to learn. They made the honor roll, or graduated college, or earned their doctorate. I especially cherish the reports of children who, after strengthening their learning skills, developed much more confidence in class and in life. What could be better than helping students genuinely believe in themselves again? (I highly recommend experiencing your own dose of that feeling, by the way.)
Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Riverside. Major: Human Development. Emphasis: Education. Even more valuable was the direct training I received under Dr. Joan M.
