When my niece started going to physical therapy at the age of 10 after her doctor attributed her chronic back pain to her overloaded school backpack, I knew something needed to change. My teenage sons' backpacks had grown too heavy for me to lift, and I couldn't help but wonder what kind of long term damage hoisting these packs was causing our kids. When I dug deeper into this problem, I realized that not only were kids' backs out of alignment, but so was the curriculum. As a post-secondary educator, I could see that many of the materials used in secondary classrooms did not align with college learning outcomes. This mis-alignment may be one of the key factors in low graduation rates at four year universities and may also be contributing to the large population of college students needing remedial education. So I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. After studying Common Core standards and engaging in extra-long conversations with my Dad, who spent 43-years as a high school Language Arts teacher, I then turned my attention to pedagogical research databases for the next two years as I earned a post-secondary teaching certificate. And, in 2010, I developed my first, Common Core-aligned digital study guide for my community college students. All of that work paid off when students unanimously agreed they preferred the "study guide" to a traditional textbook. Hurray! But what I didn't realize until that first semester was how much easier these 'teaching kits' made my life. Since I developed them specifically for a flipped writing classroom, they pulled together homework, classroom activities and assignments all in one easy-to-use pdf document. The same size as a magazine, these classroom-tested, teaching and learning kits 'unfold' online to allow for "flipped" teaching. I now use these printed and digital Study Guides in all of my classes. View-do videos provide writing instruction outside the classroom, cloud-storage enables access via mobile or internet devices, and this flexibility opens up the classroom for active-learning and student-centered projects that better support Common Core learning. Online, these all-inclusive digital guides expand through links that include video micro-lectures, assignment directions, activities, and reading material. Won't you join me in revolutionizing K-12 classrooms and saving our kids' backs by considering one my Language Arts study guides for your classroom? Designed to support teacher-selected texts or as a stand-alone curriculum package, these Study Guides offer an instant upgrade to "flipped" 21st Century instructional model or work as an excellent Common Core aligned all-inclusive teaching kit for new teachers!
