I am currently teaching in my second year at Holyoke High School, in Holyoke, MA, as the ELA Ethnic Studies teacher for Holyoke's pilot program of Ethnic Studies at the high school level. I design and implement my own ELA curriculum focused on Ethnic Studies. In my class, we learn to read the word and the world, analyzing systems of oppression and forms of resistance. My class is called "Representation and Storytelling of the Other."
My teaching style is casual but strict. I have extremely high expectations for student behavior, and I hold students accountable for helping maintain a safe learning environment for themselves and their peers. At the same time, my class is also a place for community, creativity, and camaraderie. When students walk into my room, they are walking into a separate environment from the rest of the school, where we are safe to explore, question, and critique both literature and the world around us.
