I have 9 years of classroom teaching experience. I began my career in a fifth grade classroom and after 5 years, I moved to a fourth grade classroom teaching job at my alma mater. I then finished my master's degree in classroom teaching and received certification as a reading specialist at the same time. I spent a year training as a first grade reading recovery teacher and then taught one additional year of reading recovery and early literacy intervention groups at a school in St. Louis County, MO. I am now a reading specialist for 1-5 grade students.
Most of my best training occurred while training as a reading recovery teacher. My teaching style reflect that training. I teach children to read within the context of continuous text. Writing is an important part of early literacy learning. I strongly support a balanced approach to literacy learning. Learning should be hands-on, child centered, and follow a constructivist model.
