MY TEACHING STYLE

Who Is Judy A. Merashoff? Hi All, I am a newly retired (November 6, 2014) Intensive Reading Teacher. I taught 9th grade students at Palm Bay Magnet High School for the last 12 years of my teaching career. I also taught adult ESOL students during night school, Career Research for Brevard Virtual School, and helped the teachers at my school to learn ways to incorporate technology into their lessons. I did not do all of this all the time. ;-) My students were the ones that could not pass our state reading test (FCAT). They felt like failures, had been in an Intensive Reading class for several years, did not want to be in any reading class, and hated to read. My job was to get them to love to read, understand what they read, be able to express their feelings about their passage, and pass the reading test…no small feat. I loved making my lessons fun, motivating, engaging, and different. My students would enter class every day and find the seating different. I liked changing things up. Some days we worked independently in rows. Some days students worked with a buddy and other days in small groups. Soon, they got excited to find out what we were learning that day. To help my students further, I had on-line tutoring classes two nights a week for an hour using the program WIMBA. We all enjoyed our WIMBA sessions. I did have to purchase several headphones with microphones for checkout, but they were appreciated and always returned at the end of the year. The students that participated in the WIMBA on-line tutoring received one point to be added to their exam grade. Yes, some earned as much as 10-12 points. My exams were not easy and the WIMBA students worked solid for that hour and sometimes a little longer. I also prepared a classroom website where I made interactive on-line learning games for them to practice their vocabulary or the skill we were working on.
