I taught grade 5 in a regular classroom setting for 15 years; and grades 3, 4, and 5 in Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) classes for 25 years (teaching enrichment, reading and math at various times in the program). Within my 40 years of teaching, I also taught part of the day in an Exceptional Children's Resource program (EC), along with the AIG enrichment. The last 15 years, before I retired from teaching, I taught reading and math to fourth and fifth grade AIG students.
My teaching style is student-centered, where I basically model, moderate and facilitate learning by creating an atmosphere that encourages, excites and stimulates a thirst for knowledge and independence in learning. My instruction is directed toward the understanding, application and practice of metacognitive strategies/skills (visualizing, questioning, connecting, predicting, etc.) to aid in comprehension. I integrate reading, social studies, science, math, art, and drama through novel study units with on-going assessment by observation, test-taking practice, activities, and portfolios that apply graphic organizers.
In RI, I was selected with a team of teachers, to train in and develop an academically gifted program for the West Warwick School System, worked on the Science Curriculum team, and was chosen to present the science curriculum plan to the School Board. In 1984, I was the Teacher of the Year in West Warwick, RI and one of six finalists for the state Teacher of the Year. In 2000, I was the Academically Gifted Teacher of the Year for North Carolina. In 2004, I was a Time Warner Cable Star Teacher.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, a Master of Education degree, an art endorsement, certification in Academically Gifted Education, and was National Board Certified in 2000 to 2010.
My novel study units, are being used by teachers throughout my school system. I have developed a phonics instructional program called "Phonics in a Flash" that has also been field tested and used with struggling readers in grades 3 through middle school. I am an avid sports fan. Though I am now retired after 40 years of teaching, I still enjoy travel, golf, skiing and being a member of a local garden club. I am also a member of a book club for adult literature, which is quite a new experience for me after having spent my career reading mostly children's literature.
