I've been a certified elementary teacher with a specialty in middle-school mathematics for over 40 years. I've taught in public schools, private schools, and online school; also, I homeschooled my own children and taught in a homeschool co-op. Since "retiring" from formal teaching, I've working in curriculum publishing for the past 14 years.
I'm very much into guided discovery and hands-on learning, but I'm still a stickler for the details (correct punctuation, labels for math problems). I encourage kids to do and be their best.
In 2006, I won Calvert Education's Apgar Award for pioneering their online program, Calvert Virtual Academy.
I went to public school K-12 in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated high school valedictorian. From there I went to Bethany College in West Virginia to major in elementary education, graduating summa cum laude. Over the next ten years, I earned a master's degree in elementary education from Towson University in Baltimore, MD with a 4.0 average. To maintain my teaching certificate (and also to keep my brain sharp), I've taken many additional courses, including 3 courses in Instructional Design and 4 courses in Virtual Instruction.
I'm the mother of four fantastic kids, all of whom are hard-working, socially adept, and gainfully employed. I'm now the grandmother of 7 amazing kids (ages newborn-9) and love every minute of it!
