I had the wonderful experience of teaching 1st grade for a year and then looping up with my class to 2nd. Then I continued to teach 2nd grade for nine years. I also worked with adults from other countries. I began teaching at 46 years old, after a 30 year remodeling career. I coached little league for my young sons which lead me into the elementary school. My wife was also teaching elementary.
My teaching style was a project based approach with a whole class focus. I had up to 28 children and it was necessary to do this. My reading program is whole class and my scores using the DRA assessment tool were three times higher than all the teachers in the school. The population of my class was mainly Yaqui Native Americans, so my projects were focused on them. I did a number of projects, but the reading program and my authentic, to scale, three story pueblos surpassed everything. I also did a full length play each year, with every student being involved.
Only the admiration of the children and their parents, as well as the advancement of the reading scores, which was a thrill for me.
