TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I earned my early childhood education degree from Kent State University in 2010. I did my student teaching in a 3rd grade classroom and loved working with upper-elementary students, so I went on to earn my Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement the next year. This allowed me to teach 4th and 5th grade as well. I am currently half way through earning my master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Kent State! My first two years of teaching, I taught 5th grade in all subject areas. I am now entering my third year of teaching and will be teaching 2nd grade!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I truly believe that children learn in more ways than I can teach. This is why I feel it is so important to allow children the time and freedom to explore new concepts in ways that make sense to them. I feel that creating an environment in which children feel safe and secure enough to share ideas is the foundation of a classroom community where children respect and learn from one another. Children have a deeper understanding of material if they are active in creating that understanding in ways that make sense to them. Allowing children to explain their thinking further deepens their understanding and also gives other students another way of looking at something that they may not have thought of. I also believe that connecting the curriculum to the children’s interests, providing them with many different ways of learning, and structuring each lesson to meet the needs of all children in my classroom will help each child feel capable, confident, and successful.
