This activity is designed to have students refresh their understanding of parts of speech, and have fun with reading A Christmas Carol at the same time. I used this the day before our holiday break and students had a lot of fun!
This activity uses the STEAL method (Speech, Thoughts, Effect on Others, Actions, Looks) to help students understand indirect characterization. Students are required to use direct quotes from the text to support their ideas.
Use this as an in class activity to practice close reading and literary mood. I model and complete the first round of questions with students, students complete the second round of questions in groups, and then complete the third round of questions
This half-sheet of paper is helpful when teaching students about thesis writing. I had them glue it in to their composition notebooks. Included are bullet points as well as a formula students can use when they get stuck.
