I am in my 10th year of teaching. I have spent seven of those years in 4th grade, and one in 3rd, where I had the opportunity to loop up with my kids. This year I am making the transition down to 2nd grade, and I am very excited for it! All of my years have been spent in a Title I school. My first school in Manassas, VA was 75% Hispanic. It was an amazing experience to set my career off on the right path. One of my years was spent working with our inclusion teacher all day. I also worked in both a standard classroom setting, but also in a block schedule where I only taught reading & math. I was part of two curriculum writing teams--math & writing, with our Deputy Superintendent. The students were amazing and worked very hard. I know teach in Charlotte, NC at a school that is aspiring to be a 90/90/90 school. Both years, I have worked in a departmentalized setting. Last year I only taught literacy, and this year I continue to teach literacy and science.
I love to have my students be the discoverers and teachers in my room. Of course, I do facilitate learning, but want my students to be able to have experiences doing things and teaching others to really retain their learning. I often play off of their learning styles or multiple intelligences in my planning as well. I use many Kagan strategies to help facilitate an effective classroom setting.
In 2006 I was awarded Honorable Mention for Michigan Student Teacher of the Year. In 2007, my 4th grade team was awarded with a $5,000 grant from Dollar General for classroom books that promoted diversity and global awareness.
I graduated from Oakland University in Rochester, MI with a B.S. in Elementary Education and a major in Sciences. In 2010 I graduated from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA with my Master's in Curriculum & Instruction, with a concentration on Reading. I am went to Gardner Webb University here in Charlotte, NC to get my Administrative License.
I married my high school sweetheart. We had our first baby girl in November 2014--Alexandra! She is the love of our lives! I am proud to be from Detroit, MI. I am a HUGE baseball fan--GO Tigers! I love to travel and explore different parts of the world. And I just recently got into running. In May 2012, I ran my first half marathon, and in October 2013 I ran a FULL marathon in Detroit!
