TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I'm a third-year teacher who has taught in both alternative and public education. I currently teach 6th and 7th grade in a resource room setting and am enrolled in graduate school full-time. My goal is to earn my Master's degree in Special Education and become a special education administrator while continuing to teach.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that all children can learn, though not necessarily in the same ways. I strive to find and create resources that my students can use to learn in ways that are effective and meaningful for them. Many of my students have emotional/behavioral struggles as well as learning disabilities, and I spend a great deal of time building relationships with my students and helping them develop coping and social skills. I believe that teaching my students that they are worthwhile and capable people is as important, if not more, than teaching them long division and plural nouns.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

A struggle that I consistently run into is finding resources and activities that are at my student's level (usually 4th-5th grade) but are not too "young" for them. My students may be working at a lower level, but they are still 11-13 year old kids and they do not want to work on activities that contain childish clip art and young story lines. I tend to make a lot of my own resources because I want my students to have work that reflects their interests as well as their academic abilities.
