I have been teaching art and Video Production for 8 years in a public charter high school. My students win national awards each year and are known for their excellence in visual arts.
I have a studio-based and project-based classroom. I teach my students communication skills (techniques) before creativity because I believe that asking students to be creative before they feel confident drawing or painting isn't fair. It would be like asking someone to write you a song on the piano without having them learn to play first. My students have deadlines and due dates, but I set the class up so that they can work at their own pace. If they finish a project, they have the tools and resources available to them to start on the next one
