Creating professional, innovative, organized, and effective teaching materials and curriculum is one of my favorite aspects of teaching. In fact, I am currently pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Florida in curriculum and instruction, and I love it! I am National Board Certified in English Language Arts for Adolescents and Young Adults with over 10 years of experience in secondary education. I have a breadth of experience teaching a variety of courses at various levels, including 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English (honors and regular level courses); creative writing; yearbook; and reading. I am also a certified mathematics teacher for grades 6-12, am endorsed to teach reading, and am endorsed to teach English language learners.
My teaching style? Funny you should ask. I am organized (sometimes to a fault) and strive to bring professionalism to my classroom. At the same time, I believe that balance is key. Whenever I can, I attempt to infuse my lessons and activities with humor and opportunities for my students to express their creativity. Ultimately, I pride myself on quality and hope that my students will see that I "practice what I preach" because I expect quality work from them. If I don't set high expectations for my students, then I cannot expect them to grow, can I?
I have been awarded "Teacher of the Month" and have, on a separate occasion, been nominated for "Teacher of the Year." As yearbook advisor, the yearbook earned numerous local, state, and national awards including Columbia Scholastic Press Association, gold medalist and National Scholastic Press Association First Class with two marks of distinction. In 2007-2008, I was selected from a faculty of 180+ for a four-member GLIDES (Global Learning Initiative through Digital Education) team. Recently, I was selected from our county's English teachers to participate in a team whose purpose is to guide the county's adoption of the Common Core Standards. My work on this committee continues today.
I attended the University of Florida from 1995-1999. I am currently pursuing a graduate degree from the University of Florida College of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I have also been trained to teach AP Language and Composition as well as AP Calculus AB.
I am tech-savvy and can provide most of my materials in various formats. If something isn't available the way that you need, just ask me and I can probably accommodate.
