TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught struggling readers for many years in grades 3-8. I've also taught 4th, 5th, and 9th grade science. I've also taught math for 4th and 5th grade. I currently teach 4th grade reading, writing, math, science, health, and intervention. I have a reading endorsement along with my middle school (4-9) teaching license and I have a masters degree. I piloted FIP (Formative Instructional Practices) Program in 2011-2012 for the Ohio Department of Education.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe students cannot hit a moving target. In order for students to be successful, they must know what success looks like! I use "I CAN" statements to help clarify learning targets. I do many learning target "check-ins" (also called formative assessments) while teaching. For writing assessments, I use graphic organizers, outlines and writing templates to model and guide students through the writing process and meet expectations. I also hold student-teacher writing conferences for all writing assignments and we set individual writing goals. For math and science, students have "cloze" notes to help them gather information and they engage in as many hands-on activities as possible. My students work in teams quite often. They are just as much responsible for their learning as I am. Learning is fun, but we get it done!
