TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I began my professional career as an attorney, but after four years of practicing I decided that teaching would be a much better fit for my personality and skills; I was also excited to make what I felt was a greater contribution to society. I went back to college for a couple years to obtain my teaching credentials, and I have been a teacher in elementary and high school since 2002.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I expect quite a bit of independence from my 5th graders; probably in part because I have seen what 9th graders can do on their own, and I want to encourage younger kids to do the same. A lot of my lessons, therefore, rely upon students' own creativity and self-starting. I recognize 5th graders (and 9th graders) DO need structure, though, so I try to provide very explicit instructions and clear expectations.

I attended Trinity University in San Antonio for my undergraduate degree; the University of Kansas School of Law for my juris doctorate degree; education classes at Wichita State University for my teaching credentials; and I have done a few master's degree-level classes at the University of North Texas.
