TEACHING EXPERIENCE

12 Years in New Zealand teaching core subjects for Year 7 & 8 students. Literacy teaching - both reading and writing - based on diagnostic testing and using the formative assessment to guide small groups. 2 Year Ministry of Education contract, based in schools, to teach teachers how to improve their literacy teaching. This involved teacher observation, pre and post discussions and analysis of formative assessment and teaching strategies. Currently English Co-ordinator for Middle School (Years 5 - 8)

MY TEACHING STYLE

I prefer a student focused approach - allowing students choice where possible and teaching them to be independent learners - taking responsibility for planning, time management, choice of tasks, submitted assessments etc. I like students to negotiate the content, the learning process and / or the product. There are times when direct teaching of skills is necessary - I do that too.
