My teaching career spanned 18 years, 20 years with community settings included. The unique opportunity of my experience was developing the L.A. program (7-12, all subjects) for a start-up private school. Over the years, I always taught some combination of 3 to 6 of those grades while overseeing the deepening "dept" and training its new teachers. Choral conducting and Religious Studies were other streams of my teaching. For the final 6 years, I served as Admin. Assist. alongside my classes, with responsibility for academic advising and student events.
I was impacted early in my teaching by a booklet entitled, "Teach to Transfer" which changed my definition of teaching. True teaching successfully transfers information to the student. Until we place information within their grasp, we aren't teaching. My drive, and my "style," became breaking-down and reassembling content into its most accessible form. That "form" is usually concise, clear, creative, and cause-effect connective. Textbooks are a bag of groceries; teachers are the chefs who make a palatable and digestible hot meal. Our school's classes were always mixed-ability-level integrated; for this reason, also, varied methodology and optimum transfer were imperative. Great challenges and great fulfillments run as pairs: Secondary Education is such a duality. My teaching experience was a natural "process of elimination" search for what actually worked! The rest? Shredded long ago. What I share through TpT is what remained. Welcome to my store: Secondary Sense.
Other than sweet student nominations for "Who's Who," nothing in this category, but my greatest reward is witnessing the competence and passion of former students who now teach L.A. in high schools and colleges.
1983 B.S. in English & Music Secondary Education. No longer in the classroom, I function as a lifelong learner and enjoy teaching adults in community settings. "The man who has ceased to learn ought not to be allowed to wander around loose." --M. M. Coady
