I am an English Language Arts teacher at Oak Valley Middle School in Poway Unified School District. I have dedicated my teaching career to helping elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students develop the reading, speaking, and writing skills they need to succeed in school and at work. I have 13 years of teaching experience in secondary and post-secondary education. I am motivated by the potential that I see in every student and from the work of inspired educators who make a difference in students' lives every day.
My teaching methods and philosophy stem from a simple belief: set high expectations for attitude and performance, challenge students with complex tasks, and support students so they can meet my expectations. I love students and I love the learning process. My classroom is collaborative, very active, and focused on developing essential skills for college readiness.
I have authored AVID's Critical Reading: Deep Reading Strategies for Expository Texts, developed and wrote for AVID Weekly for five years, and co-founded LiteracyTA--an education company that specializes in developing reading, speaking, and writing tools and resources for K-16 students and teachers. In 2009, I was named Teacher of the Year by the El Cajon Lions Club and in 2010 I was named Teacher of the Year by El Cajon Valley High School and the Grossmont Union High School District.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in Rhetoric and Writing Studies.
