TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught various subjects in grades K-6, English Language Development, and even taught the deaf and hard of hearing for a short time. I am currently blessed to teach kindergarten. I earned my bachelor degree in art which, combined with loads of patience for little ones, helps make teaching primary grades a joy! Being a mom of two (a girl and a boy) and aunt of many, also helps me understand how little brains, bodies, and emotions work.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching philosophy which can be divided into three main parts: a safe environment, academic growth, and connection with community. A safe environment is listed first because little learning can take place without it. Well-defined rules and consistent consequences combined with opportunities to earn privileges help create a safe and secure atmosphere. I believe in managing problem situations immediately and calmly, but firmly. A safe environment includes freedom to make mistakes or take academic risks without fear of being ridiculed by the teacher or other students. Students must feel that their emotional and physical needs are being met. Only then can they focus on learning. Once a safe classroom environment is established, academic achievement can flourish. Every child can learn. Effective teachers accept responsibility for student learning and maintain high expectations for all students. Because students have different abilities and achievement levels, however, teachers must focus instruction on each student’s current level and progress from there. Frequent and continuing assessment as well as differentiated instruction ensures students are being challenged yet not meeting with frustration. Instruction should include a wide variety of strategies taking into account students’ different learning styles (e.g., kinesthetic, interpersonal, verbal-linguistic). When appropriate, students can be given choices to determine their own unit topics or learning avenues. This, combined with well-planned, interesting lessons taught with enthusiasm will do much to maintain student engagement and participation. It is far better to have fewer, quality projects and assignments that can be completed with thoroughness and purpose, than to have a vast number of rushed assignments. Classroom activities and learning should also include connections to community, different cultures, and the environment. Field trips, guest speakers, and parent participation are just a few of the ways teachers can facilitate this connection. It is important for students to understand that they are active participants in an ever-changing world. Choices they make affect change in themselves and others. Teaching is a collaborative effort among students, parents, teachers, and other professionals. As a teacher, I will work to foster these relationships – these connections – to enhance student learning. I embrace the teaching profession. In the midst of its challenges, I find equal reward. I will strive to encourage and guide students to become independent thinkers, problem solvers, and vested partners in their own learning.
