Teachers, I have taught in a self-contained special education elementary classroom for nine years. Especially for our Autistic learners, it is best if they know what to expect. For this reason, visual schedules provide the support that is needed.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Hello! My name is Judy Grant and I am an elementary special education teacher. My students skills range from students who are non-verbal to students who are reading on a DRL level 29. I needed curriculum that offered errorless learning and curriculum that engaged all my learners. This is why I created TPT lessons for diversified learners. Most of my students are autistic. Keeping that in mind, I have created social skills products that are based on real incidents that my students face everyday. Topics include personal space, being nice on the playground, to not getting to check out books at the library when you haven't returned the ones previously borrowed. Another topic of interest to me is CVC words. By teaching our students CVC words with graphics, they are more likely to remember the words and be able to recall them. One student has shown a great improvement on recalling words as well as building her communication skills by pronouncing the words correctly. CVC words are one of the best building blocks to students learning to read.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My motto is "Keep Calm and Teach On!" Most of my students are autistic and sometimes my class can get a little crazy. I have learned that if YOU stay calm, then your students are more likely to remain calm. This motto is true in any classroom. Another big aspect of teaching is to always be prepared. I always have activities that I can pull out in case we finish early, or the lesson is not going well. In the classroom, I love to get messy. Children benefit from sensory experiences and I try to build activities into my daily routine. Sensory experiences can also provide enriching outlets for being creative.
