This is my fourth year teaching high school math. Each year I have taught Geometry and Algebra 2.
I like to do a mini-lesson on the board together when we start a new topic and then let the students practice while I walk around and answer questions. We usually will spend the next class period practicing more to help them get a good understanding. I work at a lower performing school where the students do not pick up on stuff easily so I have to get creative with my approach. Therefore, when I make items for them, I try to break it down and make it simple for them. Since math requires a lot of practice we do a lot of handouts. I try to mix up the way we do them though so that the students do not get bored. I like to do matching worksheets and gallery walks. I reflect after each lesson and think of what I can do the next time to make it better. I am finding out what works well in the classroom and what does not. I am not afraid to try something new with my students. Each day is a learning experience for myself as well as my students.
