I have been teaching in public schools since 1996. I have taught first through third, as well as a three year stint as a fourth grade Reading Intervention teacher. In 2004 I received National Board accreditation. I currently teach third grade Reading and Language Arts as part of a gifted cluster team.
I believe in a balanced literacy approach that mixes direct teaching of skills and strategies within a broader unit based curriculum. I believe that when students have time to study deeper through units, they make connections that last a lifetime. I also believe that reading and writing are vitally linked, and one is just as important as the other.
I achieved National Board Certification in 2004. I am also a published author, having written 5 works of fiction, currently available on the market.
I grew up overseas, graduating high school from the International School of Bangkok in Thailand. I attained my bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
I have been married since 1992 and we have two children who give us joy daily. Our daughter graduates from high school this year (2014), and our son enters high school in the fall. It's going to be a little lonely being the only girl in the house now!
