I'm the author of over a dozen books of exciting hands-on learning projects for students that connect STEM concepts to history, literature, and the arts. Formerly the Homeschooling Expert for ThoughtCo (previously known as About.com) and the parent of two college graduates who homeschooled K-12, I also have 15+ years experience teaching enrichment programs for all ages and offering professional development workshops to teachers and librarians. My work includes developing low-tech, inexpensive STEAM projects and curriculum for schools, home, and youth organizations such as Girl Scouts of the USA.
All my projects combine STEM, history, and culture with art and literature -- and kids love them! You will find my projects open-ended and adaptable to any classroom or at home. In most cases, all you need are ordinary crafts and household materials, and projects often cost just pennies per student. And I provide background information and additional resources to help you tie in projects to your teaching goals.
My book BOTS! (under its former title "Robotics: Discover the Science and Technology of the Future") was a Chicago Public Library "Best of the Best" nonfiction selection in 2012, and continues to help kids get started with easy low tech/no tech STEAM projects. In addition, my book PAPER INVENTIONS was the top-selling title at World Maker Faire New York and was featured at the Barnes & Noble Mini Maker Faires across the country!
I hold a degree in English Literature from McGill University in Montreal, and received my art training at Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
I am the proud mother of a video game designer/programmer and a filmmaker, and I live in upstate New York. You can find out more about my books and workshops at kathyceceri.com.
