TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 6 years. I spent one year in 1st grade, four years in 2nd grade and one year in 5th grade as a Reading/Language Arts teacher.

MY TEACHING STYLE

In my classroom I used a mini lesson/independent practice format. I share new learning or strategies with my students through mini lessons, and then give them an opportunity to practice either independently, in pairs, or small groups. When I taught younger grades I used the guided reading format to work with students each day on their reading goals. In 5th grade I tried the Daily 5 format for the first time. Most importantly, I believe students need time to read in order to become better readers...

I have a BS in Elementary Education from Indiana University. Additionally I have a Masters in Education from Southern Methodist University. I am certified as a K-6 general education teacher, ESL certified, Master Reading Teacher and Reading Specialist. I also have my Certified Academic Language Teacher license to work with dyslexic students.
