I have worked with children of all ages. I have taught Special Education classes for kids in grades sixth through twelve, Health and Personal Development classes for middle school kids, trade school for young adults, and Alternative schools for grades nine through twelve. I have taught younger kids, from pre-school through elementary grades. Every classroom experience provided me with vast opportunities to receive more than I ever gave, to learn more than I taught, and to know we all learn best by example.
My philosophy in the classroom is that my role is to facilitate the learning and meet the needs of my students in the ways that work for them. I support classroom environments that promote respect and provides physical and emotional safety for students to learn what inspires them to learn. I declare to my students from day one that we are here to learn together and the best outcomes begin with simple agreements for desired results with consistent and appropriate consequences for negative and positive choices.
In my thirty plus years of teaching, my greatest honors come in the verbal and written thank you notes that I have received over the course of many years. The highest honor is the gift of sharing all the wisdom children courageously shared in the birthing of the original four Keep Kids Safe Books, Self Help Skills for Kids. A standout honor was being invited by the Warden of a nearby prison to run an educational program with the inmates based on the Keep Kids Safe Books.
Growing up in unsafe environments, I barely graduated from High School. With inspiring teachers who supported my pursuing higher education, I was inspired to become an educator as well. I attended BYU Hawaii Campus and graduated with a degree in Secondary Education. I continued graduate classes to receive certification in Special Education, and studied at the University of Connecticut for working with Gifted and Talented kids and later went to the University of Utah for Seminary Studies at their Institute of Religion.
I grew up in foster care and spent time in a state facility for children while waiting to be placed in the next foster home. I learned to appreciate early on the importance of education and the kindness of others. My experiences provided me with the skills and tools I needed to maximize every opportunity that children give me to help them be safe and support them to succeed in life.
