I taught for 14 years. I have worked with students in Texas, China, and Florida. I love helping students become lifelong readers. Before teaching, I worked for three years as a sports reporter for a central-Indiana newspaper. I also worked for two years writing articles about athletes for my college's PR office. My experience in journalism and teaching gives me a unique ability to write quality, engaging nonfiction passages about famous athletes. I can also design rigorous, standards-based activities to go with them. I've also been a huge sports fan my whole life!
I love teaching my students using hands-on literature, group collaboration, and hands-on projects. Kids need to experience what they learn. They also need to be given chances to fail, then succeed during a lesson. Students need to be able to work with each other to achieve a goal. I often have my students work in groups to discuss books, how to improve writing, different ways to solve math problems, and how to complete hands-on projects in science.
I was chosen to attend the 2013 Mickelson-ExxonMobil Teacher Academy in Jersey City, NJ, in July 2013.
I graduated from Providence High School (Clarksville, IN) in 1997. I graduated with a B.A. in Journalism from Franklin College (Indiana) in 2001. I completed all the required courses and exams to earn my Texas Teacher Certification in 2002.
