Experienced qualified kindergarten teacher with a demonstrated history of working in the early childhood industry for 16 years. I'm from New Zealand and moved to Melbourne, Australia 5 years ago. Skilled in Early Childhood Education, Educational leadership, Marketing, Mentoring, Management, Quality Care and Emergent Curriculum. Strong professional graduated New Zealand Tertiary College in Auckland,
Inspired by the RIE philosohpy and respectful teaching. Also love Reggio Emilia approach. I believe all children need a safe, secure environment where they feel they are nurtured which enables them to have a sense of trust and belonging. I believe children should have opportunities to engage in free play, but at times have a structured environment so they know the routine and can anticipate what is coming next. I believe that teachers should work as a team and collaborate together for ideas to extend the children’s learning by listening to the child’s voice and observing the child’s interests. I want to build responsive and reciprocal relationships with the children and Whanau. I do this by getting to know the parents and families by making an effort and encouraging conversation on a regular basis. This will help me to better understand the child and collaborate with parents in a close partnership. I believe that as teachers representing a centre we should be involved with the community and invite the community into the curriculum. I will do this by getting in touch with local businesses, services and schools to try and build reciprocal relationships and be involved in the community including fundraising for community groups and organizations to help children develop a sense of contribution to those less fortunate. I believe the early childhood setting should be clean, inviting, stimulating and aesthetically pleasing to the eye with children’s artwork, group and individual experiences and different cultures. I will do this by sticking to cleaning rosters, setting the environment, engaging with the children and keeping the wall displays up to date with informative and relevant information for parents and children. Also in my position I need to make sure the other teachers are on top of these things as well by delegating jobs and communicating with staff what needs doing. I believe teachers need to encourage good healthy eating habits and table manners by being a good role model and informing children of nutrition and how our bodies work to help develop positive attitudes towards eating, sleeping and looking after our bodies. I do this by only eating healthy foods in front of children and doing mat times that encourages discussion about healthy foods and the food pyramid. I believe children should spend some time in mixed age environments to help promote positive relationships and help foster scaffolding. I also think children should spend the majority of their day in an age appropriate environment with developmentally stimulating and challenging equipment for cognitive and physical
