I have been teaching for 20 years in Alberta. I have taught grade 2, 4 and 6 in the past and the 2012-2013 school year will be my 11th year of teaching Kindergarten. Our school division is piloting two full day every day Kindergarten classes next year and I am going to be teaching one of them. I have taught half day morning and afternoon classes for 9 years and last year I taught two full day classes where the students came all day for two or 3 days a week.
I am excited to go to work each day with 5 year olds. My philosophy is that I want the students to have FUN every day when they come to school. Kindergarten is their first year of education and I want them to enjoy it. I am currently reading the Daily 5 and the Cafe book and want to implement it into my class next year. I use Jolly Phonics as well as Itchy's Alphabet with a little bit of Animated Literacy to teach the alphabet. With every letter that I teach, I have the students do a directed drawing to help develop their fine motor skills. One of my favorite things to do with the students is their performances. In our school our Kindergarten students have their own Christmas Concert and Kindergarten Graduation. I spend a lot of time coming up with fun dances or songs to perform for the parents. A lot of these ideas are what I plan to share with you. I take a lot of pictures of the students all year long and I make a Powerpoint to show the parents at the end of the year at the Graduation. I also burn a copy for each parent to keep. We also have many special events throughout the school year such as I am Special Night, Apple Fest, Friendship Fair, Student Led Conferences, Mother's Day Tea, and Dad's Night which I want to share ideas for.
I have a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
I am a wife to Garry and a mother of two children. Shayla is 16 and going in to grade 11 and Connor is 13 and in grade 8. I am very busy with their activities. Shayla figure skates and Connor plays hockey so our winters are very hectic!
