I have been a teacher for over 10 years now. There isn't a day that goes by that I am not grateful for the work I get to do each day. Being part of each child's life, building relationships with families, drying tears, making my kids laugh.... these are a few of my favorite things. Of course the art of teaching is my favorite too! I love creating my units and lessons, reaching those essential objectives and watching my students succeed. Tapping into the wonder of science to teach reading, writing and math is also in my top 10. The ohhs and ahhs from the class when they see an apple dropped in water or observe a seed sprouting is the best experience any teacher could ask for.
Over the years I have grown and changed so much as a teacher, the kids have taught me so much. I would say that mostly I believe in creating a classroom environment that is relaxed, friendly and yet highly structured with clear procedures and routines. We focus on good character traits, what it looks like to be kind and a good friend to others and a good student. I believe in thematic teaching... integrating science into our math, reading, and writing objectives as much as I can. I believe in laughter and building relationships, supporting families, and teaching kindness. I am always learning from others, taking classes, looking for the key to each child.. that technique that will reach my reluctant readers. I want the light in every child to shine bright.
