TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Kristina Spencer has spent much of her teaching career in Florida's Santa Rosa School District, where she taught at both the high school and elementary levels. Her professional certifications include Educational Leadership, Social Science (6-12), English/Language Arts(6-12), Business/Technology(6-12), and Elementary Education. With over a decade of classroom experience, Ms. Spencer served in many leadership roles, including mentor, grade-level chair, technology chair, school advisory council member, and lesson study facilitator. As a lead teacher for technology integration for her school and district, she provided districtwide professional development to her peers, offering meaningful instructional strategies for incorporating technology aligned to standards. Through the Discovery Educator Network, Ms. Spencer became a STAR Educator, a role that allowed her to collaborate with other teachers and expand her personal learning network. In 2013, she was awarded the honor of Teacher of the Year. Ms. Spencer served as Project Manager on the DEN Connects Leadership Council. DEN Connects is an innovative, theme-based project that allows educators to connect and collaborate globally. She has traveled to conferences across the country presenting project based learning, model lessons, and Web 2.0 integration strategies to teachers and administrators. Currently, Ms. Spencer is a Professional Development Specialist for Discovery Education, which allows her to share her expertise with a national audience.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I firmly believe in a student-centered classroom, focused on differentiated instruction and collaborative learning tasks aligned to standards. With teachers as facilitators, students develop a growth mindset where learning occurs as students create, analyze, and recreate. Project Based Learning and STEM are both innovative ways to foster this learning environment, but any every day lesson can become student-centered and collaborative with the proper tools and solid pedagogical foundation. I LOVE each and every student I meet, and I do everything I can to light a spark within them and be the smile they see each day.
