Although my experience in public education is only 9 years in the making, I have definitely been teaching for MANY MORE! Back in 2004, I started teaching English to Spanish-speaking adults at a community non-for-profit organization near my home in Austin, Texas. Through this experience, I not only increased my bilingualism, but also discovered my PASSION for teaching! In 2009, I was alternatively certified to teach 4-8 grade bilingual students. Since then, I have received additional certifications in the following areas: EC-12 Languages Other Than English [Spanish] and EC-12 Master Reading Teacher. During my 8 years in the classroom, I taught fourth and fifth grades at two different 'Title One' elementary campuses in South Austin. Currently, I am a Bilingual Field Supervisor at Texas' Region 13 Education Service Center, working with first-year teachers who are seeking alternative certification through our program.
My teaching style is centered around the following "BEST" practices: *Cooperative Learning [Kagan structures] *Drama-Based Instruction [UT-Drama for Schools] *Integration of [visual arts, music, and movement] strategies advocated by Mindpop/Austin ISD's Creative Learning Initiative *Consistent creation/implementation of cross-curricular units of study *An abundance of planned "language experience" opportunities which provide consistent, routine skill-practice [in both languages] to support increased development of BILITERATE students
Teacher of Promise - 2009/10 Austin ISD, Pleasant Hill Elementary Teacher of the Year Nominee - 2013/14 Austin ISD, Mollie Dawson Elementary Teacher of the Year - 2014/15 Austin ISD, Mollie Dawson Elementary
I was born and raised in Liberty, Missouri, a suberb of Kansas City. It is an upper-middle class town, with minimal diversity. I attended the University of Texas at Austin and majored in Spanish, Latin American Studies and Hispanic Studies. I graduated in 2005, having completed all of my degree-specific coursework with honors. Additionally, I researched, wrote, and presented an undergraduate thesis [in the Spanish language] during my final semester at UT.
I secretly LOVE translating and/or creating original resources for Bilingual, Dual-Language, AND Foreign Language classrooms! I would love to partner-up with a TPT seller that's interested in collaborating to offer [ALL of] our combined posted products/resources in BOTH English and Spanish! As a former bilingual teacher who NEVER had the same resources as my English-only counterparts, it's my goal to do anything in my power to close this gap! SI SE PUEDE!
