TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am in my 20th year of teaching. Nine of those years were spent in an Outdoor Education setting. The students would do certain activities and then have to write about their learning's and experiences. For example the students would have a 3 hour class where they learned about the environment and the interdependence of species by catching animals out of the lake, classifying them, and identifying their unique niche in the ecosystem. After observing demonstrations and involvement in more activities the students would have to write a persuasive to a development company on why it would be a bad idea to build a shopping mall or amusement park near the lake. After a Native Americans class the students would "compare and contrast' two native American tribes. Following a visit to the past in a Pioneer class where the students learned about early American history the students would write a 'narrative or descriptive' piece on what is was like being a child growing up in those times. Outdoor Education is were I developed Word Works as a writing aid for my students and many other educational instruments that are soon to follow. Currently, for the last 11 years, I am teaching in the public school system of a small, rural, East Texas town. Here I teach Fifth Grade Science/Lab and am able to easily and happily merge my hands on experience with the students learning.

MY TEACHING STYLE

As you can tell by my early teaching experience my style is grounded in a hands on approach. Then the students are asked to apply their newly gained information.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Oddly, I began my education career after graduating from Mary Hardin Baylor with a B.A. in Behavior Science and a minor in Psychology. I went back to school at Stephen F. Austin State University to obtain my teaching certificate. I have a 1-8 composite certification with a social studies emphasis and a 4-8 science endorsement. Later I obtained a M.A. in Instructional Design with an emphasis on technology from American Intercontinental University.
