Hello everyone! I am a general education teacher teaching Pre-K ages four to five in a self-contained classroom with 20% of the students diagnosed with a learning disability. I live in Lakeland with my wonderful son, two dogs, Mississippi and Starburst, and one neurotic cat named Lone Star. I created Lanie’s Little Learners in memory of my mother Elaine whose nickname growing up was Lanie. She was an early childhood educator, teaching Pre-K for years. She was always encouraging me to pursue my own interest such as a BFA, but she gently hinted at teaching as an alternate career. If she could see me now, I know she would have a “I told you so,” smile on her face :-)
I currently have two bachelors. The first is a BFA in fine art in 1999. For ten years I was a graphic designer designing anything from business cards to billboards. I loved the creativity, but lacked the meaningful fulfillment of having a career. What prompted me to go back and earn my second degree in Early Childhood Education was the death of both my parents within one year of each other. My son who is the only grandchild lost not one, but two grandparents back to back. For the first time I experienced what it meant to truly be a single parent. Before, I had my parents to lean on. So, in 2009 I finished student teaching, passed the GACE and earned my teaching degree. I am currently pursuing my masters in Middle Grades Math and Science and will graduate in the Summer of 2014.
