Speak is a novel I use with my ninth grade students. It is a poignant story that is well written and perfect for this age. When we read the novel, I break the text into five parts, and students are required to complete the guided reading questions

One of my favorite teaching strategies is literature circles. They are an excellent way for students to begin interacting with the text on a deeper level than "It was good; I liked it." I know there are many different ways to use literature

This is a great way to begin the year and help students get to know each other a little better. I give five minutes for students to find as many people as they can to sign the chart, and the winner earns a homework pass!

Experts have proven that student choice is crucial in developing a student's love for reading. I try to incorporate this idea into my classroom through mini-lessons and novel study. Every year, I have students choose a novel that interests them,

This is a great way to review the text of Beowulf. Students must revisit the text to find direct quotes that support elements we have studied: theme, kennings, and characteristics of an epic. It echos the writing process: students must complete a

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught everything from 8th grade Language Arts to 12th grade Composition in my fifteen years of teaching. Currently, I teach 9th grade honors English, Creative Writing, and European Literature I (a humanities class) in a wonderfully supportive school

MY TEACHING STYLE

I feel that I am more of a facilitator than a teacher. I love to conduct my classroom through mini lessons, cooperative learning, and discussions. In my experience, students learn best when they are engaged through exploration, discovery, and teaching. I provide support, motivation, and focus. I believe in student choice and an emphasis on process in both writing and reading.
