I have taught 16 years at the middle school level, 11 of these with 8th graders. This year will be my seventh at the elementary level. After one year teaching Gifted, I-STEM, and SPED in an elementary school, I switched back to working with SPED students full time. This year I'm also partnering with another teacher for a Mini Economy® after-school group.
The use of technology, games, and explicit instruction are integral parts of my teaching style.
National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T) certification, Spring 2005. Shining teaching moment: That moment when a student transitions from confused to "Now I get it!"
Undergraduate degree in Psychology (B.S.) and masters degree in education (M. Ed. Curriculum and Instruction, Middle School) from Eastern Mennonite University. Coursework for Gifted endorsement completed at UVA. Central Virginia Writing project (Summer 2000, UVA). Digital Story Telling Institute (Spring 2004, UVA). Mini-Economy Workshop/endorsement requirement (Summer 2015, JMU).
In my spare time, I enjoy crocheting, especially with plarn (yarn made from plastic bags).
