I have taught English literature, composition, and research at a community college for over 20 years. I have also taught remedial reading, writing, and grammar. I hold a bachelor's and a master's degree in English. I am an expert in online course delivery and am an administrator for my college's LMS (Blackboard Learn). I train faculty in online pedagogy and use of the LMS, assist with curriculum design, and am directly responsible for the functionality of the LMS and for troubleshooting problems with the LMS. I also train faculty at my college in how to create ADA-compliant documents and PowerPoints.
I believe in a student-centered "flipped" classroom in which students work together to solve problems and develop a thought process in which the instructor is a facilitator rather than a lecturer. I believe in nudging students toward creative solutions that they develop themselves rather than handing them answers and prompts. I believe in relating subject matter to real-world applications. I believe in blending online resources into a traditional face-to-face environment to enhance learning. I believe it is critical to teach students how to use these resources, and how to navigate the world of online learning in general, so that they become comfortable in an online environment and enjoy as rich a learning experience as possible. I believe in fully participating with my students in an online course so that students feel the presence of an instructor. I believe in creating online and in-class activities that engage students and encourage them to communicate in ways that develop critical-thinking skills.
